DebtAtlas puts U.S. public debt in human terms. Instead of a single headline number, it shows what federal, state, and municipal debt works out to per person, state by state, on an interactive map.
[Why you built it: what question you were trying to answer, or what bothered you about how debt is usually reported.]
How it works
- Federal debt comes from the U.S. Treasury and is split evenly across every American
- State and municipal debt are added per state, so you can compare the full picture across the country
- Tap any state to see its breakdown, or switch between federal, state, and local views
- [Data sources and how often the numbers update]
